Expense vs. Value

» How much does a custom website design cost?

To build a professional website takes skill, talent, technical expertise and of course, experience. It takes marketing skill and a significant investment in talent, ongoing education, and infrastructure. The value of a contract is dependent on the scope of the project and the clients specific needs; $3500 - $30,000 is an average range for our clients.

All of our projects are a fixed price. Our clients always know how much the project will cost and what the payment structure will be before we sign the contract. We encourage our clients to share their budget with us so that we can structure a package that meets or beats that budget.

» I know a guy who can build my website for $600

The person posting their services on Craigslist will always beat our price, and we have no intention of competing with them. Experience and technical skill show in a professionally designed and built website. Inexperience and sub-par execution will always show, you will get what you pay for! Image counts so invest in the suit, it will make you look noticeably better in the long run.

» My internet service provider (ISP) offers websites for $50/month

These are essentially rental websites, you do not actually own the website. If you move ISPs, then your website disappears. The obvious difference here is the design and implementation quality of the website. These designs are bare bones and plain, the level of control over the presentation is little to none. Your ability to have someone develop custom arrangements and add-ons is non-existent, not to mention little if any search engine optimization. Image counts for a great deal, and users are extremely savvy. While you might not be able to tell the difference, the average user certainly can.

» Defining a realistic marketing budget

The standard guideline for a marketing budget is between 3% and 12% of your gross sales. So a company with $1 million in sales should set aside between $30,000 and $120,000 for marketing their brand.

Not all of this should be devoted to your website, but your website should be the cornerstone of all of your marketing and branding efforts. It is, after all, the one place anyone can find all of your materials and resources 24/7.

Rather than asking if you can afford something, a better question to ask regarding any marketing or website investment is, can I afford not to do this?

» I am just getting started, can I afford this?

Start-ups struggle with budgets for websites and marketing as a whole. A professionally executed website will see tremendous returns on the investment, if properly implemented, maintained and utilized. A better question to ask regarding any marketing or website investment is, can I afford not to do this?
